When the Nestor Martin foundry was established in 1845 its research laboratory had a raised hearth on which the stoves were tested. Stoves which were built only to establish the design parameters for improving combustion efficiency were considered to be laboratory equipment and became known as Hearth Stoves. The term is still used today to describe the laboratory stoves built to define new reference standards.
